THE FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT, November 27th, 2016
"Advent is a season of anticipation and preparation, as we await the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. It holds a significant place in the liturgical calendar and is observed by Christians worldwide. At Iglesia Cristiana Getsemani, we invite you to join us on the first Sunday of Advent, November 27th, 2016, as we embark on this meaningful journey together."
The Significance of Advent
Advent is derived from the Latin word "adventus," which means "coming" or "arrival." It symbolizes the anticipation of the coming of Jesus Christ, both in his historic birth and his promised return in the future. This season reminds us to prepare our hearts and minds to welcome Christ into our lives.
During Advent, we reflect on the prophecies leading up to the incarnation of Jesus and engage in spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and reading Scripture. It is a time of self-reflection, repentance, and hopeful expectation.
The Advent Wreath
One of the most recognizable symbols of Advent is the Advent wreath. It consists of a circular wreath with four candles, one for each week leading up to Christmas. Each candle represents a different theme: hope, peace, joy, and love. On the first Sunday of Advent, we light the first candle, symbolizing the eager anticipation of Christ's coming.
As we progress through the weeks, we add an additional candle each Sunday. The candlelight serves as a visual reminder of the increasing light of Christ shining in the midst of darkness.
Advent Traditions and Customs
Throughout the centuries, various customs and traditions have emerged to observe Advent. These practices differ across cultures and denominations, yet they all center around the themes of preparation, waiting, and hope.
Some common Advent traditions include:
- Advent Calendars: Advent calendars are interactive calendars that count down the days until Christmas. Each day, a door or compartment is opened, revealing a surprise or spiritual reflection to engage individuals and families.
- Advent Devotionals: Many individuals and families use Advent devotionals, which are daily readings and reflections designed to deepen spiritual awareness during this season. These materials often include Scripture passages, prayers, and thought-provoking questions.
- Advent Wreath Prayer: Lighting the Advent candles is accompanied by a prayer or reflection for each week. This practice promotes a sense of unity and purpose among those gathered.
- Advent Music: Hymns and songs specific to Advent are sung during worship services. These songs focus on themes of longing, hope, and the birth of Christ.
